While the play suggests the grim reality of what lies ahead, it is also a portrait of the hope that children naturally possess and how these particular children achieved a triumph of spirit through their personal relationships and their artwork.
Writer and Director Anna Smulowitz is the daughter of two Auschwitz survivors and the play is a tribute to her many relatives who died in the Holocaust. Terezin has toured schools and theatres in the US and internationally for over forty years. It was the winner of the American Children's Television Award in 1984 and has been translated into several languages.
In 1994 Anna was given the Model Person award by the Timberland Corporation for her work on this play, and in 1996, she received the Mayor's award for the Arts, also for Terezin. This award-winning play was recently performed to rave reviews at the Edinburgh film festival and has been invited for a return performance in Germany. Smulowitz productions is currently in negotiations to bring Terezin to Off-Broadway for 2012-2013.
