We are very lucky to be able to work with so many talented and educated people. Here's a little bit of information about each one of them:
Since 1979, Anna has acted in, directed or produced over 100 shows in Newburyport, and developed three major summer arts programs, each of which is currently operating. She has been a keynote speaker for many conferences and an Expressive Therapist in private practice and in the Center House Day Treatment Center in Boston. Currently, Anna is a Hospital Chaplain at Beverly & Salem Hospitals. Recieved her BFA from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts in 1996. She has been teaching theatre and performing locally for over ten years. She held the position of Head Teacher at Governor Dummer Theatre Camp in 1995, '96, and '97. In 1998 she co-directed a more intimate summer theatre program in the Actors' Studio at the Tannery. She is now approaching her fourth year as the Artistic Director of the Summer Theatre Camp at Veasey Park in Groveland, Ma. Nikole Beckwith - Drama Teacher Has been working in theater for 11 years, getting her start in Glouster, she has since been working in Newburyport, Boston and Portsmouth NH. Her experience is not only on the stage but also in film and writing. Most recently she has been recognized for the debut of her second original one woman show "The Johnny Chronicles" and starring as "Chicklet" in the acclaimed Independent Submarine production of Charles Busch's "Psycho Beach Party", also she just finished shooting a lead role in the Boston based independent feature film "Fem Vitae". Nikole has been teaching theater on and off for the past 8 years, to students ages 6-19. She got her start assisting classes at the newburyport actor's studio in 1995, went on to teach at various summer programs, served as the executive director of the drama corporation at the Sudbury Valley School in Framingham Mass for the 1998-99 school year, returned to the studio as a teacher in 1999 and also teaches the after school drama workshop at the Brown School in Newburyport. She is looking forward to another great year at the studio with new and old faces alike. Dierdre Budzyna - Drama Teacher Has over twenty years of experience as a children's theater actress and director. She has taught kindergarten through fifth grade in both public and private school settings. Deirdre received her Master's Degree from Lesley College in Creative Arts in Learning and her undergraduate degree from Mount Holyoke College in theater and education. She is assistant directing "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" which opens at the Firehouse in March and "Broadcast America", an original piece performed by over 100 students at the Page School in West Newbury.
As an actress, Holly has performed extensively in the North Shore area, working and performing with over thirty different production companies. As a human rights and peace activist, Holly has used theatre to participate in educating the public against issues of violence, hatred, and intolerence. She toured schools across The United States as well as Eastern Europe for several years with Anna Smulowitz's "Terezin: Children Of The Holocaust" and also has collaborated with the Women's Crisis Center of Newburyport with educational theatre concerning domestic and dating violence. Juliet Nelson has been a member of the Newburyport theatre community since the age of seven. She has performed extensively on the North Shore, and has also worked in Boston and Portsmouth, NH. She has taught drama classes to young children for several years at the Summer Theatre Camp at Veasey Park in Groveland, MA and at the Actor's Studio in the Tannery. Juliet received her B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College with a concentration in cultural anthropology and literary theory. She has been a preschool and kindergarten teacher at the Newburyport Montessori School for the past three years. She is currently working to obtain her Montessori certification and is also pursuing a master's degree in early childhood education at Endicott College. Juliet is also a musician, and is a cellist and vocalist with the band Tigersaw. |

Upon arrival in Newburyport in 1979, Anna founded the Newburyport Children's Theatre, now known as Theatre in the open. Over the past 24 years, she has worked with most of the local theater companies. Currently, she runs Smulowitz Productions which presents dramas and musicals in the Newburyport area. Smulowitz Productions annually collaborates with over 100 local actors, directors, designers, writers, choreographers, musicians and stage technicians. The long term goal of the organization is to provide contemporary and classical theater experiences for children and adolescents. The Smulowitz Acting Workshop teaches drama and acting to 200 students each year. Students range in age from 4 to 18 years.
Studied and performed theatre in the Boston area as well as Holland, Italy, Los Angeles, and Minneapolis. She is the co-founder of Veasey Park Theatre Camp in Groveland, MA where she also works as a head drama instructor. Holly has taught drama programs at The Actor's Studio, Theatre In the Open, Governor Dummer Academy, The Sparhawk School in Amesbury, and The Newburyport Montessorri School.
